Should You Tip Contractors?
Is it customary to tip contractors?
Should you or shouldn’t you? Can they even accept it?
Many people are unsure about whether or not they are expected to tip contractors. A general protocol for HVAC contractors is not simply unknown, it’s nonexistent. There is no universally accepted policy when it comes to tipping contractors. Different HVAC companies have different policies, and many will not have a formal policy in place at all. They will simply leave the decision to you.
This non-policy is not very helpful. Let’s take a deeper look.
Many consider it appropriate to tip servers, drivers, hair stylists, etc., based on the quality of service delivered. It is not a far reach to apply this same practice to contractors. It is important not to forget that a contractor is performing a service. Thus, they can be rewarded for that service to whatever extent you deem fit.
As with other service industries, tips are always appreciated. They are never mandatory. Use your best judgement. If you believe that your contractor delivered excellent service then feel free to reward them accordingly. They will let you know if their company’s policies will not allow them to accept the tip. And they will appreciate the gesture nonetheless.
It’s possible that you may wish to reward their service but you do not feel comfortable giving a monetary tip. Fortunately, you can reward contractors in other ways. For example, you can offer to buy them lunch while they are working. You can also offer them homemade baked goods. Oftentimes these “tips” are appreciated even more than monetary compensation.
